PTDF Overseas Postgraduate (M.Sc & Ph.D) Scholarship

The main objective of the Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF) Overseas Scholarship is to give candidates a chance to benefit from a diversified pool of knowledge and access world-class facilities at partner institutions across the globe. Interested candidates can apply through the PTDF for specific programs offered by these partner institutions. 

The award provides coverage for different expenses, including airfare, health insurance, tuition fees, bench fees (if applicable), and allowances to cover living and accommodation costs.

Please be aware of the following if you are interested in applying:

  • For the 2023/2024 award, applications will only be accepted from PTDF partner universities in the United Kingdom, Germany, France, and Malaysia. This is because the scholarship’s high standards can be maintained, and the objectives of the scheme will be best served in these countries.

PTDF Overseas Scholarship Eligibility

For Ph.D Applicants:

Please ensure that you meet the following requirements:

  • Completion of the mandatory National Youth Service (NYSC)
  • Proficiency in computer usage
  • First degree with a minimum of Second Class Lower (2.2) and a good second-degree certificate
  • A research proposal on a relevant topic in the oil and gas industry (maximum of five pages), including an introduction, objective, methodology, and mode of data collection
  • Lecturers must provide a letter from their Vice Chancellors confirming that they are not receiving any other scholarships
  • Possession of a National Identity Number (NIN) and completion of NIMC verification (charges apply) before applying for the scholarship.

For M.Sc Applicants:

Please note the following requirements:

  • A minimum of Second Class Upper (2.1) in the first degree or Second Class Lower (2.2) with relevant industry experience
  • Completion of the mandatory National Youth Service (NYSC)
  • Proficiency in computer usage
  • Possession of at least five O/level credits, including English Language and Mathematics
  • A statement of purpose (maximum of 500 words) that outlines the reasons for the proposed study, its relevance to the industry, and its potential impact on national development
  • Possession of a National Identity Number (NIN) and completion of NIMC verification (charges apply) before applying for the scholarship.

Required Documents:

  • Certificate or Statement of Result for First Degree
  • Discharge certificate from the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC)
  • Results for West African Examinations Council (WAEC), General Certificate of Education (GCE), Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE), or National Examinations Council (NECO) with relevant PINs on the application form for PTDF to verify on the relevant website.
  • Recent passport photograph
  • Letter of identification from the Local Government
  • Master’s Degree Certificate (for PhD Applicants only)
  • Proof of membership in professional associations

PTDF Overseas Postgraduate Scholarship Selection Criteria

Please note the following regarding the selection process for PTDF scholarships:

  • The scholarships are highly competitive, and exceptional candidates will be chosen.
  • Based on the qualifications submitted, top candidates from each state for each category will be invited for an interview.
  • A selection committee will evaluate the applications using the following criteria:
    • Academic merit, including the quality of degrees, full academic transcripts, and professional qualifications acquired.
    • Relevant publications (for PhD applicants only).
    • Membership in professional bodies.
    • Viability of the study/research plan.
