Vice Chancellor, University of Port Harcourt, Prof. Owunari Georgewill, has identified steadfastness and commitment of the management team as some of the qualities that earned the institution its number four position as best university in Nigeria.
The VC announced that Webometric, a reputable international ranking organisation, has ranked the school in fourth position.
Georgewill, while briefing journalists in Port Harcourt, said based on the parameters used in their ranking, the university had leaped from number five last year to four this year.
He also noted that based on the indexes used in assessing the university, the institution topped others on openness, transparency and excellence, but did not score high on impact index.
The VC attributed the promotion to the collaborative effort of the management team and stakeholders, stressing that they will not rest on their oars until the university becomes the best academic institution in the country.
He said: “This university, since we came onboard, has focused on the reasons it was established, which are teaching and learning, research, community service and entrepreneurship.”
Meanwhile, the university has dismissed claims that the school has withheld the graduation list of over 2000 students, stopping them from proceeding with their compulsory National Youth Service.
The VC clarified that its either the students have not ratified their results from their departments or yet to know their graduation status.
He advised graduands to go to their respective departments and request for their spreadsheet so as to ascertain their statuses.
