Akinkugbe urges UNIMED graduates to embrace entrepreneurship

Graduating students from the University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED), Ondo Town, Ondo State, have been urged to create life-changing opportunities out of the current challenges of the country and not be dampened by them.

Founder and Chief Executive Officer of secureID Limited, Mrs. Kofo Akinkugbe, in her lecture at the 4th convocation ceremony of the institution, appealed to the graduands to help reshape the nation’s economy by recognising the importance of bringing technical skills, interest and talent into alignment with life skills.

Akinkugbe, who spoke on “Youth entrepreneurship and reshaping Nigeria’s economic future,” said education is an enabler that must be garnished with right character that will propel them to the very top.

According to her, as fresh graduates, they must develop an entrepreneurial mindset that will be properly nurtured and avoid negative influences of the crowd.

“Have the audacity to dream widely, within or outside the realm of your professional discipline or field of study. Bring reality to your dream for it to become a vision and develop action plans or strategies to execute them.

“Even after 25 years, I am still on my own journey, broadening horizons and bringing innovative ideas to business execution. Nigeria is a land of huge and unexplored opportunities, digital and otherwise, and I encourage you to identify yours and position yourself based on your talent and interests.

“Yours is a generation with many distractions, so you need to remain resolutely focused. Embrace personal discipline and decisiveness, even when you are unsure of what the next season brings. Avoid negative influences of the crowd and be positively engaged.

The visitor to the institution, Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, described as impressive and inspiring, the tremendous progress the institution has made in the last eight years.

Speaking earlier, the vice chancellor, Adesegun Fatusi, said the university had graduated 327 students from its undergraduate programmes, a significant increase over the 176 graduates of the 2020–2021 set. These graduands include the first set of Medical Laboratory Scientists.
