Worried about the menace of alcohol misuse and drug dependence in the country, a non-governmental organisation, Freedom Foundation, in partnership with EU-ACT, British Council and others, have commenced a statewide advocacy and peer educators training in Lagos to mitigate early initiation to drug and alcohol.
Speaking on the initiative, Freedom Foundation Coemmunications Manager, Emmanuel Etim, said over 3,000 students in Agege and Eti-Osa areas of Lagos, have benefited from the project.
He said the campaign, which started in 2021, include visits to various stakeholders within the communities, seminars, workshops, radio tours, social media live sessions and lots more.
The foundation also hosted a community outreach that brought together residents, including teachers and leaders of various unions, to discuss the menace of substance abuse in Lagos, its effects on adolescents and youths, and the need to form a coalition to educate in-school and out-of-school young people on it.
The foundation’s project coordinator, Oluwafemi Sanya, said the group runs a drug rehabilitation programme (House of Refuge and Operation Better Life) that caters for the treatment and rehabilitation of persons dealing with substance abuse.
The group has also engaged in several activities, which included online and offline peer educators’ life skills training, online community awareness and creation of drug-free clubs in secondary schools within various communities in the state.
