A group, Mafoya Oluwa Mbe Foundation, has called on the Oyo State government to return literary and debating societies to public schools, saying these will sharpen the intellectual capacity and curiosity of young ones.
The founder, Segun Agboola, at a press conference in Ibadan, said the foundation would continue to partner government and other bodies to ensure ignorance and illiteracy are eradicated in the state.
He said the organisation would be organising debates for students and give scholarships to brilliant ones. Agboola said: “We met with governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State and we spoke on human resources development. One of them is education. The state government has done well with cancellation of school fees. This has increased attendance in public schools and reduced the number of out-of-school children.
No government can do it alone; all hands must be on deck to eradicate ignorance and illiteracy.
“This is one of our missions in the foundation. We will organise debates for students in any language they are more comfortable with, literary and debating society must be returned to public schools in Oyo State and fundamental use of language should be revisited”. He also lauded Makinde for his exploits in the education sector.
