The Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology (OAUSTECH), Okitipupa, Ondo State, is set to partner with Caribbean Maritime University, Kingston, Jamaica, to commence the School of Maritime Transport and Logistics.
The vice chancellor, Prof. Temi Ologunorisa, disclosed this at a press briefing to herald the maiden convocation of the institution set for March 25.
According to him, the Maritime Academy, sponsored by the Ondo State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (OSOPADEC), will train critical skilled manpower necessary to drive the maritime industry.
While stressing that the school will be cited in the coastal community of Ilaje local council, Ologunorisa stressed that the courses in the academy will boost the economy of the state, which is in the process of establishing a deep-sea port.
“The Ondo State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (OSOPADEC) is building a new school—the School of Maritime Transport and Logistics—at Ugbo Nla, in the Ondo State southern senatorial district. The Maritime Academy will train the critical skilled manpower necessary to drive the maritime industry and ultimately the blue economy of the state.
“The state is in the process of establishing a deep-sea port. This course will also help boost the local economy of the state aside from providing critical manpower in the maritime industry currently in short supply in Nigeria,” Ologunorisa said.
On the forthcoming convocation, the vice chancellor said: “There are three major highlights in the forthcoming convocation. The first is the award of Doctor of Business Administration to the Chancellor of the University, Oba Fredrick Obateru Akinruntan, the Olugbo of Ugboland.
“The second is the award of first degrees to 982 graduands from five sets: 2014-2015, 2015-2016, 2016-2017, 2018-2019, and 2019-2020. The breakdown showed that 26 made First class; 307 Second Class Upper; 488 Second Class lower, while 161 made Third Class.
Former vice chancellor, University of Ibadan (UI), Prof. Olufemi Bamiro, is expected to deliver the convocation lecture titled: “Transforming the Nigerian university system for graduate employability and socio-economic development.”
